A belly button lace is a crocheted cord made of 100% organic cotton that is used to tie off the umbilical cord when it is cut. This is a natural alternative to a navel clamp.
The belly button lace has a length of 30 cm so that there is enough space to tie easily.
What you have left can be cut off, and put a knot in at the end. So that there is no long chorus with the baby but a comfortable button.
It is recommended to store the belly button lace in the freezer. This keeps the belly button lace sterile.
The umbilical lace is laid with a surgical knot. Every midwife and nurse in the hospital can tie this knot.
Knot instruction First of
all, it is always important that you let the umbilical cord beat out as long as possible. The longer, the nicer the start for your child.
What are you going to do? You make 2 surgical knots to close the umbilical cord.
Make it comfortable: take your time, the longer the umbilical cord is attached to your child the better.
Put the umbilical lace around the umbilical cord
You mix the ends of the lace 2 times instead of 1 time as at a start of your shoelace or flat button. As a result, the knot is secured and cannot slide.
Tighten the knot with policy.
On top of the surgical knot, make another flat simple knot to fix it. Tie the knot with policy.
Pull the lace ends to the bottom of the umbilical cord
Make a surgical knot here with the flat button on top. Tie the knot with policy.
Cut off the end of the belly button lace to a comfortable length and unbutton the end.
Now the umbilical cord can be cut between the umbilical lace and placenta.
The navel lace is also sometimes called a navel choir. This is exactly the same. Navel laces are increasingly used as an alternative to a belly button clamp. It is a comfortable alternative. You can choose what you want. It is advisable to discuss your wishes with your midwife, so that she knows about this.
